Personal Training was once seen as a luxury frequently used by the rich and famous, but over the last 10 years this has massively changed.

With more and more people prioritising their health and fitness goals, not just for vanity, but to get a better quality of life, the role of a personal trainer has shifted into more of a health coach. Personal trainers take great pride in joining their clients on their personal journey to optimal physical health and mental wellbeing.

Whilst exercising alone has been proven to help improve and strengthen physical and mental health, the internet can still make it quite difficult in finding the right direction with what to do when you’re training by yourself. There are many myths and fads circulating across social media, often with the backing of self-proclaimed fitness and health gurus, however there isn’t usually the best evidence supporting the information these types of people are sharing. This is one of the many reasons why bringing a good personal trainer on board your fitness journey is priceless.

As someone who has now been in the industry for over 10 years, I am going to share 5 key areas you should take into consideration when you’re looking to work with a personal Trainer.

Passion

You have decided to take your fitness and wellbeing journey seriously because you feel motivated and hungry to do so.

A personal trainer who’s in the industry for the long run and who loves what they do is exactly the type of person you need to bring on board to support you towards reaching your goals.

A simple way to find out how passionate the trainer you have found is, and what type of person they are, is in your initial consultation with them. Don’t be afraid to ask them questions about their own future plans and goals as a personal trainer, as well as what qualifications they have. These days, anyone can become a personal trainer so make sure you have found one who is going to prioritise your journey and who is taking their own journey seriously too.

Devotion

Ensuring your personal trainer has time for you is crucial. A personal trainer who is in high demand might not always be the right choice for you as they might be overly committed which means they could take their eye off the ball when it comes to your journey, especially if they don’t have correct or enough systems in place to manage all of their clients.

A personal trainer’s job, and their relationship with you, is so much more than the 1 hour training session they spend with you. You need someone who will be holding you accountable and who will be consistently checking in on you. Your personal trainer should be providing you with resources to help you while you are away from them. They should be someone who can be on call or at least responsive during times where you might need their help or advice.

Feedback

A personal trainer should be a warm person who takes your opinions into consideration. They should welcome any feedback you may have about your training sessions, your progress and most importantly, how you feel your relationship with them is going.

You definitely don’t want or need someone who makes you feel on edge or like you’re inferior to them. This is your hard earned money you’re spending, and your body that you are working on, so you should be able to feel like you can question everything your personal trainer asks you to do, and you should expect a detailed answer that makes you feel comfortable enough to ask questions in the first place.

Camaraderie

You should definitely choose a personal trainer who you actually warm to, trust, and who you get on with.

Chances are, you’re going to be spending a lot of time with this person so it’s vital you pick someone you have some mutual ground with, and who will make your fitness journey a pleasant and enjoyable experience.

Priority

Your personal trainer’s number one priority should be helping you to reach your goal. They should never lose sight of your goal, and each time you meet or communicate with each other, they should ensure that you and your fitness journey are top priorities for them as much as they are for you.
